Before you calculate the risk you have in your life, I would like to go over the most common risks for you. There are three types of risks that have been assessed as the most likely to occur in life; death, contracting a critical illness, or becoming disabled (in anyway) at some point. These risks are unfortunately not thought of regularly, and sadly only 8% of Canadians have coverage for all three risks. To protect against these risks, insurers have come up with 3 different types of insurance; Life Insurance, Critical Illness insurance, and Disability Insurance.

Here are the stats on the odds of major life changes occurring for a female and male non-smoking couple aged 35.
A non-smoking couple aged 35
Disability before 65 – 60% ~~~ Critical Illness before 65 – 40% ~~~ Death before age 65 – 10%
Disability, Critical Illness, or Death before age 65 – 74%

Here is a similar situation, but this is for couples aged 25.

Know that these numbers are not just made up, but are based on statistics from the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, the Commissioners Individual Disability Table, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
